Me, Me, Me

Who doesn’t like talking about themselves? Nobody! That’s who! So when Suzy bestowed upon me the Tell Me about Yourself Award, I said “Yippeee!” though I said it nice and quiet so as not to draw too much attention to myself ‘cause that’s me, a riddle wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma. No, wait. That was Russia. I’m just your everyday attention whore unassuming blogger who appreciates the chance to share. Yeah, that’s it.

Anyway, to accept this award, I must tell you 7 things about myself and then pass the award on to 15 bloggers. First, the me, me, me stuff:

  1. When I was in high school, my nerdarific self was listed in a book that spotlighted the top 2% of all HS students in the country. Now, and for about the last three decades, when I say/do something that’s borderline idiotic, my husband raises one eyebrow, grins, and says, “Top two percent.”

  2. While I would have been thrilled no matter the gender of our newest grandchild, I have to say that I am ridiculously delighted that she’s a she. Do you know how much more fun it is to buy clothes for a girl than for a boy?

  3. I think it’s more fun to buy girls’ toys, too. When our kids were growing up and I’d shop for them, I’d go down the aisles of girls’ toys and have trouble deciding what to buy because the whole thing looked like a fest-o-rama of bliss and I had a limited number of dollars to spend. I’d round the corner into the aisles of stuff marketed for boys and have trouble deciding what to buy because it all looked pretty lame. I’m still that way.

Seriously, how many pretend dump trucks and sports cars and fire trucks and helicopters and police cruisers and cement mixers does one kid need? If I were choosing by what looks like fun, I’d say zero.

  4. I lost five pounds somewhere between the treadmill and the elliptical machine. Don’t worry, though. I’ll probably find them hiding in the Christmas cookies.

  5. I didn't realize that I had somehow failed to write anything in this part until I previewed the post and it showed: 5. then nada. Oops. Okay, quickie random something about me. Um. I'm thinking of Christmas cookies now. I might want to get baking because while Oreos are fabdillyicious, I'm not sure pouring a package of them onto a platter would really delight my holiday guests.

  6. I went into Walmart the other day. If you know me at all, you know how I feel about Walmart. One of my hubby’s coworkers told him how much he pays for blood sugar test strips at Walmart, though, and as much as I hate everything about the place, we parked the car down there rather than at the other end of the strip mall where the much more pleasant Target is and saved a bundle.

  7. On the way through the store to the aisle with the test strips, I walked past a rack of bicycles and spotted one that really, really spoke to me. It’s a retro Schwinn cruiser and I can’t tell you how quickly I fell in love. Mad love.

I jotted down the model name and Googled it when we got home because as much as I’d lovity-love-love to tool around on that puppy in the spring, I didn’t want to buy it from Walmart. Turns out that model is a Walmart exclusive.

    Dammit.

I still want it, but I really hate the idea of giving my moolah (life-saving diagnostic cheapies aside) to that company. I’m half-hoping that one of the daycare parents gives me a Walmart gift card for Christmas so that I can get the bike and not feel dirty. Yes, I know, but please don’t judge.

  1. The dilemma with the bike is played over in my mind from a recent furniture shopping trip. We were in the market for living room loveseat and chair or chairs and I found something I really loved. Really wanted. But I could NOT buy it at that store. Everything is imported and I am TRYING to limit the imported things I buy. Furniture made in the USA is not hard to find, so I bought Lay-z-boys. I have had tons of good luck with LazyBoy, but what we bought is a close second to what I saw in THAT store! *huge sigh* And the price was a tiny bit more, but we bought American and I do like it. Sacrifice, slight and benefit huge. Wal-Mart is not on my list of "do not support" so I shop there, but I do understand your point of view.
Good luck with it and hey, if that bike speaks to you, ask hubs to go buy it for you. You couldn't say no to such a gift!

  2. I have the retro cruiser, but only because hubby likes Walmart. He's not in the top 2%.

  3. Love no 2 and congrats for your award!

  4. @Jo: You did good. Oh, and the hubs wanted to buy it right then and there, but him/me? Same exact thing.

@GPD: You do?? The 'Point Beach" one in the really cool red? Is your garage locked at night?

No, wait. Theft is even more wrong than buying from Walmart, right? ;O)

  5. @Claudia: I can't wait for her to be born! Mid-february! :O)

  6. Ah, Beth, you need an Electra Townie. Mine is cotton candy pink with pretty white accents. It was stupid expensive (a gift- that I could not resist researching...) but the retro-girly vibes can't be beat. I'm on your list, huh? cool.

  7. @Sylvie: I just looked at he Electra website. They do have a bunch of really snazzy bikes!

Oh, and yep. I was planning to go around dropping off award notices after work, and you just saved me a stop. :O)

  8. I have had the exact same bike/Walmart crisis. Still no bike, though. Just have wanton dreams about it. As for the award... why, thank you! I was just in the middle of a really twaddly post about myself and wondering "why would anyone want to read a post about me?!" Word Nerd saves the day!

  9. Congrats on your award! I always enjoy getting to know the people better who write such great blogs! Can't wait to read some of the others!

  10. Awwwesome!!! Way to go! And thank you! Thank you! I totally forgive you for the name thing. It happens ALL the time. No biggie!
I would secretly wish for a she too. Even now, my husband and I talk about adopting a boy, but I always wanted another girl! Lol.

  11. Eh! Go for the bike if you want it! If I decided not to shop at all the stores I despise, I would never buy anything...wait, I don't ever buy anything. But you know what I mean. lol

  12. Now, that wasn't too scary after all was it, making this mini-confession?!?!

  13. Wow! I'm going to have to give this some thought. And thank you :). This was incredibly lovely of you to think of me.

  14. How very generous of you to think of me - thank you! I'll have to think really hard to be worthy of earning this bad boy.

As for the bike, I have a Schwinn 3 speed automatic cruiser I'll sell ya. Didn't buy it at the Wal-marts (haven't spent a dime at Walmart since 2007 - very proud of myself), but it's pretty awesome.

How close are you to Austin, TX? ;-)

  15. Thanks, Word Nerd! Btw, your blog looks fantastic!

  16. #1 made me giggle....because my hubby does the same to me, except it's with a fork lift. We bought a fork lift a couple of years ago for our car lot and at the time I didn't think it was a good idea. So ever since then, anytime he's on the fork lift, he yells, "man, it really would've been nice to have a fork lift to do this" the little patootie. ;)

  17. Well, I'm not going to say I'm sorry for shopping at Wal-mart. It's across the street from my house and most groceries are cheaper then the supermarket. I'm just careful about how I look when I go there so no one will take my picture and put it on that "People of Wal-mart" website.

Thanks for the award. It just so happens that I was getting ready to do a Christmas post where I was going to reveal something that's not really a secret, but most people probably never paid attention to. Maybe I can spill some other beans--Jelly Bellies preferred.

  18. Congratulations on having a granddaughter on the way! I'm sure you'll love dressing her up and going shopping for toys. I still haven't forgiven my mom for giving away my Barbies along with their Dreamhouse! Oops, maybe I should've saved that one! Thanks so much for thinking of me, and I really appreciate this award! P.S. I hope you find another version of your dream bicycle! Julie

  19. I loved your post. I have to disagree about the boys though. I have three boys and wouldn't have a clue about a girls likes or dislikes. (I am more a tomboy). I have no trouble finding action figures, army men, sports stuff, etc. I do agree that when my boys were growing up, it was hard to find cute clothes. Now, however, the boys I babysit come dressed in the most adorable outfits. If I would have had girls, I'd probably agree 100% with you. But alas, I was blessed with boys. :-)

  20. I'm lagging a little on my visiting and commenting due to, uh, life...but wanted to say THANKS! I am hoping this will be my post for today.

  21. I didn't got to Walmart for years until I moved to Maui after reading the story about them driving a decades old family owned pickle company out of business (small businesses...be wary of getting in to bed with Walmart, their downward price pressure will decrease your margins and anger your other customers). There just isn't a lot of places here to get certain types of things. I do agree their beach cruiser bikes are adorable.

Girl clothes are so much cuter except in Hawaii you can do little boy surfer stuff which is cute, kinda... Loved reading all about you, you , you!

  22. @S. Stauss: I'm glad I saved the day...and I can't wait to read about you!

@KAT: Everyone on that list is definitely worth knowing!

@Angelia: I'm so lucky to have both genders of children and grandchildren, but shopping for the girlies is SO much more fun! :O)

    ReplyDelete
  23. @DWV: I can't seem to bring myself to do it. I can't exactly boycott them...except for when they have something I really want. I wish I could.

@Malcolm: Nope, not bad at all.

@Jane: I can't tell you how delighted I am to have found you/your blog. All sorts of wonderful, both.

  24. @The M half: I'm proud of you, too! I'm in Illinois, so that'd be quite ab trek. ;O)

    @Christina: Thank you! :O)

    @Taylor: Ha!!! Love that! :OD

    ReplyDelete
  25. @Lee: Yeah, you really don't want to see your mug on that site! :OD

@Julie: I'm on the lookout for a girly, traditional old-fashioned looking cruiser. I'm sure the right one is out there! :O)

@Tami: Boys are wonderfully fun! I loved raising my son and have a great time playing with my grandsons. And you're right about the clothes...there are a LOT more cute choices now than there used to be. :O)

  26. @MM: Terrific! I'll make sure to come by and read!

@mauishopgirl: Ha! Thanks! And little surfer boys sound adorable! :O)

  30. @MM: I'm so glad! It really is a pretty great list. :OD
